About The Artists

Ethel DixonEthel Dixon, an Alexandria, Louisiana artist, was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, raised and educated in Texas and started her art at an early age.  Her interest in art was detected while in elementary school.  Ethel studied art at Texas Southern University under the guidance of internationally known artist and professor John Biggers.  Her study of art continued while traveling with her husband to Europe and throughout the United States. Ethel developed her own technique of painting and began teaching this technique, which is simple and effective. Ethel’s paintings, (watercolors and oils) generate a warmth inside each viewer.

Ethel travels extensively throughout the Southern United States exhibiting her work.  She has been commissioned to paint favorite pets, flowers, festival posters, family homes and much more!

Since moving to Alexandria in 1979, many organizations have invited Ethel to speak and display her art. Galleries and shops throughout the United States exhibit Ethel’s work.

Outstanding Achievement in the Humanities – 1989, The Celebration of Black Women from the YWCA-YW TEENS – 1990, Nomination for the Heritage Fellowship Award – 1986, First Place for paintings in the Melrose Art Show – 1984, 1985, 1988, 1990, and Best of Show, Melrose Art Show – 1990, are among the many honors Ethel has received.

Ethel SignatureBeing an energetic individual with many talents, Ethel has found time (between painting and running an art gallery) to write three cookbooks: “Dat Little Black Pot”, “Big Mamma’s Old Black Pot”, and co-author of “Colorful Louisiana Cuisine”.  She and her husband, El, own and operate Ethel’s Studio and Rapid Frames, where Ethel holds daily art classes. Her gift shop and studio is loved by people in Alexandria and all who visit are warmly welcomed.
